“Where do I start? “…. A cliché, and a true statement all the same when you can’t find the words or thoughts to explain or relay what you want to say or express. Although it can be, it is not always a dreadful thing it can be a beautiful thing. Just look at the sunset every day. It’s never the same from one day to the next and yet every day it sets just as it did the day before. Who knows where to start to explain how this is possible. What is for certain Is that every single day the opportunity to experience a 1 of 1 art display on the biggest canvas in the universe leaves one in the end marveled to say “where do I start? “
Quoted as the “band full of surprises“the groups originators spouses Kyla and CJ Williams called on their brother Ghost and cofounded the band. Ghost coined the name Saturday Sunset and the band grew from 3 to 7 members. In 2023 Saturday Sunset released their debut single Da 3 Piece and released it on all platforms. This one single is a complete jam dissected into three different segments, covering styles of music such as pop, alternative, tribal, and jazz that was played and recorded in one take at High-Low recording studios in Memphis, Tennessee. After a restructure in 2024, the band is now a four piece canvas of Grandioso elites that play and cover everything from rock to reggae and everything in between with the addition of Memphis native and university of Arkansas Pine Bluff alumni Zynedria Phifer. Each member respectfully began using and honing their talents and abilities in church.
Kyla has played drums for groups such as the legendary Memphis Gospel Quartet, The Jubilee Hummingbird to hip-hop legends Camp-Lo and even a missionary excursion to Ecuador in South America. She has also performed at the world-famous and highly respected Playhouse on the Square in Memphis under the direction of Julian Jones world famous Lafayette’s music room, Beale Street and the Liberty Bowl stadium to name a few. Being a woman in a man’s dominated line of work, the title Drumma Queen has been earned and highly respected.
Ghost and Kyla grew up as siblings and later wrote and produce their own signature albums with Kyla recording and releasing Drumma Queen chapter 1 with Ghost being the sole producer in 2021. With an undeniable passion for sound balance, and the pursuit of an unforgettable creation, Ghost has recorded and produced numerous albums and tracks for himself and a plethora of other artists such as Memphis natives, Jason Da Hater,D Monet, and international recording artist such as Skinny Pimp and Hypnotized Minds label artist La Chat.
With the voice likened to that of Chaka Khan and an effortless vocal range all the same, Zynedria or better known as Lady Z is the bands lead singer joining in 2024. She graduated in 2001 from Fairly High School under the direction of Reverend Robert Matthews. She then attended HBCU The University of Arkansas Pinebluff in the fall of 2001 on a Music scholarship graduating in 2005 under the direction of Dr. Michael Bates with an impressive nine consecutive years of producing and directing her own concerts in Memphis. Not only that, but she is currently a member of the mighty and extraordinarily talented gospel group Daryll Petties and Strength and Praise and has been for the past 18 years. She recorded Count it All Joy with Daryll in 2006 and has participated in every recording with him since then.
CJ Williams the son of the 36 year tenured pastor Clarence Williams Sr. of Walnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Jackson Tennessee is a 33 year musical director and musician of many talents. Being led to play and teach by the Holy Spirit, CJ has taught himself how to play the stage. That is everything from piano to guitar to Bass to Oregon to saxophone to drums and some percussion. CJ would go on to Grace the stage of the Hard Rock Cafe where he met his wife Kyla, numerous world famous establishment such as Rum Boogie Café, Coyote Ugly, and WC Handy blues hall on Beale Street with the legendary Vince Johnson and the plantation All-Star blues band to name a few. On the Christian side of music he’s had the opportunity to accompany national recording artists such as Doe of the family gospel group Forever Jones and Michael Bethany while serving as guitarist of the City Church Praise Team in Memphis, TN. He has also had the privilege of playing the iconic Minglewood Hall where both he and Kyla opened for Reggae recording and Grammy nominated artist Ky-Mani Marley, son of the Reggae titan Bob Marley, and lead actor of the movie “ Shottas”.
With a 1 of 1 approach to every single guitar riff, drum rudiment, chord progression played and note sung, the Memphis based band Saturday Sunset embodies and displays the spirit that is music and all it entails. This band that consist of brothers, sisters and spouses that are all related, involks their spiritual prowess and talent to create sounds and rhythms that take you on an ethereal journey into what it means to have a musical experience. It may be common to say that when heard for the first time they must have been playing together for most of their lives. When in real sense, every member as individuals has been active for well over 20 years in Music, but only together as a unit since 2021. The diligence displayed by the formable outfit of artist, musicians and powerhouse singer could never be traced as the spirit of God leads them to play and sing what has been established in their very being.
The band has been successful at acquiring residencies at numerous venues in Memphis with great feedback and multiple request for returning performances. Saturday Sunset has performed for retail giant Amazon twice, the Grateful Heads festival in Missouri ( Cody Harris), and the city of Memphis on multiple occasions. Saturday Sunset’s independent annual show “The Mashup” has grown exponentially since its birth in 2023. Solidifying its place in Memphis music with legendary Memphis rapper and hip-hop artist Tom Skeemask headlining the 2024 production. The show has transitioned from one production a year to three productions a year in three years.
